NEW DELHI: Relentless in his misgivings about the Commonwealth Games, Rajya Sabha MP and former sports minister Mani Shankar Aiyar has alleged that the government was encouraging trafficking and prostitution for the showpiece event.
He has expressed his concern in a letter to Union tourism minister Kumari Selja.
Quoting various media reports Aiyar said escort agencies were gearing themselves up for the Games, and there were also indications that a large number of women from Russia and other east European countries were going to be in Delhi in October.
“When NACO said it was putting 150 condom vending machines at the Games village, I was stunned. These are to be exclusively used for athletes and there are estimates that 3,000-3,300 condom packs a day are expected to be used. If there are 2 contraceptives per pack, it means that 1,00,000 contraceptives are expected to be used. What kind of Games are these athletes playing?” he asked.
Aiyar, who had earlier raised the issue in Parliament, said he was dissatisfied with the response of the government and felt that putting up machines like these would encourage the wrong kind of tourists. “The government is giving free rein to these activities (prostitution and trafficking),” he said.
In recent months, Aiyar has been in the news for panning the Games, and its preparations. One of the most vocal critics, the former sports minister has decried the funds being spent on the Games and has declared that it would be a wash-out.
Earlier, he had said he would be unhappy if the Games were a success. “Personally, I will be unhappy if the Commonwealth Games are successful,” he said.
“If the Commonwealth Games are successful, they will further organise Asian Games and other events. I will be happy if the Games are spoilt,” the Congress leader had said adding that the funds spent for the October 3-14 could have been utilised for ensuring a better sporting future for Indian children by providing them sports training

ON MAY 19, I purchased three tickets to GTaranaki, each costing $140. I was told there were no children’s prices, however children 12 and under were free with an adult ticket. While attending the first Sky Academy, in Waitara High School, I noticed there were student tickets advertised for $45. I could have bought these had I known this on May 19.
In effect, I had paid $50 more than I needed for my 15-year-old.
On July 18, the first day of the concert, we were stopped by the attendant saying there were no free entries. This official was not interested to hear what I had to say and asked me to go to the Ticketek counter and see the lady there. Remember, I had already paid $50 more for my 15-year-old.
At the Ticketek counter I had to buy a $47 ticket for my 12-year- old, which I did

TERADATA Corp, a data-storage software provider, plans to penetrate into more market segments in Malaysia as it sees more industries wanting solutions to help them store, retrieve and manage data in a much efficient way.
At present, Teradata’s main customers in Malaysia are from the banking and telecommunications sectors. Its notable clients include Malayan Banking Bhd, Hong Leong Bank Bhd and DiGi.Com Bhd.
“Currently, 70 per cent of our revenue comes from the financial institutions and 30 per cent comes from telecommunications companies (telcos). Moving forward, we hope to change this as we aim to penetrate into new sectors,” said Teradata South Asia vice president Noel Pettitt in Cyberjaya, Selangor, recently.
The new sectors include government agencies, utility companies, manufacturing, retail and transportation firms.
Over the next three years, it hopes to improve the revenue contribution from new sectors.
“Within three years, we hope to have a more even revenue contribution, one-third from financial institutions, one-third from the telcos, and another one-third from new sectors,” said Pettitt.
He added that within the financial institutions market, the company also aims to grow its sales by focusing on insurance companies.
The growth in demand for data-storage and analytic solutions is driven by a few sectors, he said. Firstly, more companies in sectors like manufacturing, utilities, retail and transportation are beginning to see the importance of data to help them improve margins.
Citing an example, he said a retailer may want to target new high- value customers to increase sales in all of their 200 stores. However, each store has a diverse customer base.
“Using data-warehousing and analy-tics, the retailer can analyse all shoppers in each of the 200 stores to identify their best customers based on shopping patterns and other transactional data,” Pettitt said.
Another factor that drives demand is its price point.
